The three kingdoms constantly fought over the control of the fortress along with Hangang (Han River) in order to rule the whole peninsula. It had been constructed, starting from 1623, King Injo's first year at throne, to 1626. The wall measured 8km around enclose an area of 528,462m. The wall had 1,700 battlements, four major gates, and eight minor ones. There were four command posts along the wall and office buildings, warehouses, and a temporary palace inside.

- The Cheonggyecheon stream It used to be a naturally formed stream before the Joseon Dynasty designated Seoul as its capital. As the city had always been surrounded by mountains, its water was flowing into downtown. Because of the influence of the monsoon weather, it was dried in spring and fall, and warm and humid in summer. Thus, the stream remained dry in fall and spring, but was likely to get flooded during rainy days in summer. There were many houses and shops along the stream flowing across downtown. On many occasions, heavy rain in summertime caused flood, with houses getting inundated and bridges getting damaged, and many casualties.
- Insa-dong It is renowned for Korean antiques and fine arts. All year round people visit here to buy traditional Korean artworks and souvenirs.
